Paul Fean completed his PhD at the Centre for International Education, University of Sussex. His thesis focused on participatory action research with adult education teachers in Sudan. Cheryl Rounsaville completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham's Centre for Research in Higher, Adult and Vocational Education (HAVE). Benefits of Student Membership
Students can join BAICE at a discounted rate of £18. All BAICE members, including students, are entitled to:
- reduced registration fees at BAICE conferences and events
- journal subscription to the BAICE journal Compare - 6 issues per year
- reduced subscription rates to sister journals
- a 20% discount on Routledge books
In addition, research students:
- may post the titles of their theses on the BAICE website
- publish the abstracts of their research degrees in Compare
Additionally, two elected student representatives plan and host annual events specifically geared to meet the needs of research students - usually at low rates or free of charge to student members.

Student Opportunities
Unique opportunities for BAICE Student Members:
- BAICE offers funding of up to £1000 for projects relevant to the interests of the Association. Projects which are eligible need to promote the aims and profile of BAICE. BAICE Student Prize 2010 for paper presented at the EAST ANGLIA BAICE Conference BAICE is happy to announce that the STUDENT PRIZE for a paper presented at the BAICE conference East Anglia 2010, was won by Catherine (Kate) Jere for her paper:
"Improving access and retention of vulnerable children in high HIV prevalence communities of Malawi: the potential of open, distance and flexible learning (ODFL)"

Student Forum at BAICE and UKFIET Conferences BAICE Student Reps usually organise informal ‘Student Forums’ at the BAICE and UKFIET conferences. These informal social events provide opportunities for students attending the conferences to meet. The UKFIET Conference will be held 13-15 September 2011 in Oxford.
BAICE-Sponsored ICED – International Connections in Education and Development Conference (April 2011)
'Education for a Better Future: Education for Peace' BAICE sponsored this is a first of its kind, free international forum for students, researchers and professionals, which was held on Saturday 2nd of April, 2011 at the Institute of Education (IoE), University of London. BAICE Online Discussion Event (November 2010) BAICE Student Reps organised the first BAICE Open Online Discussion event, which took place during International Education Week, 15-19 November 2010. The Online Discussion is still available at www.baice.ac.uk/forum.
BAICE Student Workshop and Conference (January 2010) The BAICE Student Conference 2010 had the theme ‘Linking practice to theory and theory to practice: Theorising methodologies, methods and issues in post-graduate research in international and comparative education’. The keynote presentation was delivered by Prof. Leon Tikly, University of Bristol. Presentations were also delivered by ten students from four universities under themes of ‘Education and Epistemology’, ‘Frameworks for Education Research’ and ‘Gender and Power in Education Research’. In total, 30 BAICE student members participated in the conference.
The Student Workshop, facilitated by a specialist careers advisor, was attended by seven participants who reflected on and discussed career development issues in international and comparative education.
BAICE Student Workshop and Conference (June 2008) The BAICE Student Conference 2008 was held in collaboration with the Centre for International Education (CIE) at the University of Sussex. The event was entitled ‘Adventures in Methodology, Ethics and Fieldwork: The Research Student Experience and Beyond. A one-day BAICE-CIE Research Student Conference on the experiences and plans of research students in international education and development’. The keynote presentation was delivered by Prof. Angela Little, Institute of Education, University of London. Presentations were given by 14 BAICE student members, thematically grouped under these themes: ‘Methodological Issues in International Education Research,’ ‘Reflections on Researcher Identity,’ ‘Researching across Cultures’ and ‘Ethical Considerations and Methodological Issues’.
The Student Workshop on Professional Development was attended by 12 BAICE student members and facilitated by a specialist career development advisor.
Emerging methodologies and methods in the field of International and Comparative Education: insights from different stages of the research journey
2012 BAICE Student Conference
All BAICE Student Members are invited to the 2012 BAICE Research Student Conference. It will take place at the University of Sussex, in association with the Centre for International Education, on Friday 18th May. The event is free for BAICE Student Members.
This is an exciting opportunity for students to share their research findings and reflections to fellow students in the field of international and comparative education in a friendly and supportive environment. The conference theme encompasses all aspects of the research process and students at any stage of their research are encouraged to submit a paper. The call for papers below gives more details of the submission process and conference sub-themes:
